At the beginning of the new semester, in order to create a good learning atmosphere, stimulate learning enthusiasm, help the 2021 freshmen quickly understand and master the professional courses as well as learning methods, daily learning management and requirements, College of International Collaboration (Houston International Institute), respectively on September 30th and October 6th, held a meeting with head teachers and programme leaders. Dean Zhang Jinlei, Secretary of CPC Committee Shao Guang, Deputy Dean He Jiantong, head teachers, programme leaders, and instructors Zhang Jiaying and Hui Guanglu attended the meeting.
At the meeting, each head teacher introduced himself and explained the overview of the programme, clarified the language learning and grade requirements, management regulations of daily learning, also learning methods and skills. Students asked questions about the course schedule, English test and the use of textbook, etc. Head teachers and instructors answered these queries. By means of this meeting, 2021 freshmen students have got a deeper, more comprehensive and more detailed understanding of university life, laying a solid foundation for the future study.
During the section of meeting programme leaders, Li Xiaofei, the programme leader of civil engineering and deputy dean of the College of Transportation Engineering, gave a detailed and vivid introduction to students majoring in Civil Engineering on China's achievements in the field of Civil Engineering and future career planning. He pointed out that persons with high-level technique should be trained to meet the needs of modern economic construction in the 21st century and master basic theoretical knowledge of Civil Engineering in terms of Transportation Infrastructure Engineering. In the meantime, Li Xiaofei hoped that students could have a sense of global vision, pay attention to the field of science, actively participate in science and technology communities as well as various competitions, train their own ability and finally improve the professional quality.
Wang Xinnian, the programme leader of Electronic Engineering and associate professor of The College of Information Science and Technology, used a series of “E” to vividly illustrate what students “should be” and what students “should have” as a student majoring in Electronic Engineering. At the same time, he said, the Electronic Engineering programme was “at the core” of China's unprecedented changes, running with a “magnificent and bright” future. Freshmen should possess the cultivation of “1L & 3E”, including the quality and ability of “Integrity”, the ability of “Express”, “Engineering” thinking, and the fighting spirit of “Endeavor”. He encouraged the freshmen to overcome difficulties and forge ahead in the new era.
Liu Zhijie, programme leader of Mechanical Engineering and dean of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering College, emphasised that the development direction of Mechanical Engineering was to cooperate with other majors, which set higher bar for students’ learning ability and breadth of knowledge. Students were in the golden period of ability training, they should develop the quality of a student majoring in Mechanical Engineering -- habits and thoughts, keeping honest, pragmatic, practical, realistic, and substantial quality background so as to establish the concept of lifelong learning.

After the meeting with the head teachers and the programme leaders, 2021 freshmen deepen their understanding of the university’s learning life, the situation of the programme and the development of the programme. They all feedback that they would keep the instructions of the college and teachers in mind, study hard, develop themselves in all aspects, ride the wind and waves, and sail far away.
