A Letter to New Students

September 9, 2020  Chick:[]

Dear 2020 new students,

It’s a pleasure to hear from you!

Han Feizi (an ancient Chinese philosopher) says: It is better to be self-reliant rather than counting on others. What does it mean?

Looking through the dictionary, it is not difficult to find the definition. "Self-reliance" refers to self-independence, doing things all by himself, and not relying on others to complete; "Self-improvement" refers to hard work, self- encouragement, and continuously improving and refining yourself. “Self-reliance and self- improvement", as the name implies, it literally emphasise on the adherence to ethics and freedom from outside environment. And one needs to make a living all by his own hard work, not bank on others. Also, one should never be complacent about the current life. Be diligent, ambitious, and depend on one's own efforts to improve.

No.1

Carrying up my bags, it is the first time for a person to travel far away from home, embarking on an academic journey full of unknowns. Can't help but make people think: grinding away at studies, enduring present hardships to revive, chiseling wall to steal light and etc. These examples of diligent study must be ancient, mysterious and romantic, and the success of students seems to bring us the only inspiration, which is, difficulty makes a man better.

The underlying philosophy of a university lies in illustrious virtue, being close to civilians, and pursuing the perfection. The ambition of study is to "establish the heart for the heaven and the earth, establish the life for the people, continue the sacred learning for the saint, and open peace for generations to come." The university physiology under the new era should come at the right time, get talents showcased, treat every challenge as an experience, and constantly polish itself. Let experience be transformed into experience and then refined to the way of "learning for others", so that the light of wisdom and honor will sparkle.

The first challenge for universities is about "entry", i.e., "aspiring to go abroad" and "studying for the rise of China", studying thousands of miles away, and having the world in mind. The first threshold for "enrollment" is "registration", especially the issue of "Parents are not able to accompany them to school" brought about by the normalization of epidemic prevention and control. How should we face it independently?

No.2

In light of this, I hereby propose to all the new 2020 students:

Firstly, we could change the perspective, deal with the challenge, do not make excuses for difficulties, and just find a way to get things done. Then, we take "registration" as the starting point of the university journey, and transform the limited function of the external environment into the infinite possibilities at the bottom of each individual’s heart. In addition, we are able to be independent and self-reliant, to be the first in the world, to successfully and independently overcome the “challenge in the course of registration ", to cross the first chapter of the university, and get their first medal of military merit. Let the parents outside be proud of us and reassured on their way back home.

Secondly, we would better think carefully, dare to act, don't make trouble against the school, and only give yourself long experience as the first event to be dealt with individually. Weather, route, load, inquiries, and numerous hurdles are all in need of being taken care of. Please think twice before executing, be bold and prudential. And then you smoothly perform the registration procedure without making mistakes, extending a helping hand to the students around you, giving roses to others, and having a fragrance in his hands. Let the friendship of classmates sprout on the first day of school, leaving more good faith in the course of one’s growth.

Thirdly, to be open-minded, outspoken, and speak up if you have any difficulties. What the HII loves the most is about you. It is rather difficult for you to complete the entry process independently. Are we going to blame the sky and draw a cross for the "first impression" of the college? Not necessary at all. The ultimate objective of the college is "student-centered", and the college is your second home in Dalian. Honestly speaking, it takes courage to speak up. But in other words, it is just another challenge to yourself, let alone the college has got to give you a satisfactory answer.

Boys and girls, as heaven maintains vigor through movements; a gentleman should constantly strive for self-perfection. The terrain is vast, gentleman carries goods with great virtue. As the following sayings go, “Ten years to grind a sword” and “bitter plum incenses”. After crossing the mountains and seas, witnessing wind and rain rainbow, we are absolutely sure of that the one with independence and self-reliance looks the best!
