In order to help 2021 freshmen students adapt to the campus life more quickly and learn more about the requirements and new challenges, “International Newcomer Growth Forum” of the “Boosting Project” was successfully held online on August 23rd. Significantly, in this meeting the college paid more attention and spared no efforts to cultivate students’ patriotism and international horizons with the methods of sharing and studying the advanced thoughts. Additionally, the theme of this forum is “inspiring, leading, encouraging, reinforcing students to be better - Start here, Go anywhere. The management team of the college, peer tutors of students, all 2021 students and part of parents attended the forum, which was presided over by Shao Guang, secretary of CPC committee of the college.
Teachers’ Message and Guidance
Dean Zhang Jinlei delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony of the forum. She asked every new student to establish “3 kinds of consciousness”, i.e., goal consciousness, hardship consciousness and persistence consciousness; Cultivate “3 Abilities”, i.e., the ability to cherish and appreciate, the ability to understand and tolerate, and the ability to express and communicate. In the meantime, she also expressed her ardent expectation for each new student, hoping that they could become “DMU graduates with the deepest patriotic heart, the widest international vision, the extraordinary English ability, the excellent comprehensive quality and the best practical ability.”
Deputy Dean He Jiantong delivered a speech with the theme of “the Way of Learning in the University”. He focused on the two questions of “Why to learn? What to learn?” and wished that the students could have the grand ambition of “reading for the rise of China”, carrying forward the decent moral character, establishing good ethical thoughts and cultivating their integrity. Student could start from self-discipline to deeply understand the truth of “no pain no gain”, and then complete the role transformation as soon as possible, adapt to the university life, scientifically and reasonably plan and establish their own “university model”.
Freshman tutor Zhang Jiaying rendered a speech entitled “I’ll be always by your side whether it’s sunny or rainy”. She talked from “military training” to “learning”, then to “comprehensive quality” and “the way to improve abilities”. She was responsible for the students and took herself as an example to encourage students to be positive and grow happily.
The Sharing of Peer Mentors to Ensure Our Development
In the section of analyzing our university, 6 peer mentors from Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering were presented in the reality, surrounding the main idea of “diligence makes prefect-programme study session”, “activities made from thinking-the session of increasing the capability”, “ride in the wind and wave-the session of adapting our campus life”, and shared their experience to the new students.
Yuan Chen started from the view of programme studying and shared some tips and intelligent ideas of English studying & the key to studying “Calculus” and “Chemistry”, in addition to explaining comprehensive integral calculation method. Besides, Zhang Junjie, Ma Yuanchao, Fang Zhenyu and Zhang Yeshu separately introduced from the perspective of club, life, technological innovation and learning to share their own valuable experience of improving themselves. What’s more, peer mentor Liang Peilin elaborated on many aspects of the university life in a not only easily-understood, but also humorous fashion.
Freshmen Students’ Sincere Voice to Achieve Their Dreams
In terms of previous solicit articles for the Forum, after checking and interviewing, 9 freshmen students Tong Jiale, Peng Xiyu, Zhang Yichi, Tian Zheng, Li, Qingxin, Bi Chengping, LI Ziyi, Fang Leping, and Wang Rongkun were selected to deliver Chinese and English speeches. And they came from Beijing, Shandong, Henan, Liaoning, Fujian, Shanxi and etc. In their speeches, they stressed from different angles, and expressed their own opinions on the “true significance of university” by insisting on the truth, distinguishing the right from the wrong, developing their abilities, never forgetting where one’s happiness comes from. What’s more, achieving their values as well. Some parents simultaneously texted messages to express affirmation towards this forum.
College of International Collaboration (Houston International Institute) sticks to the principle of the Sino-foreign cooperatively-run institutes and strives to strengthen moral education and cultivates people to create the excellent education atmosphere. The first “International Freshman Growth Forum” of “Boosting Project” is a beneficial attempt. The educational idea of “know the university before arriving it and getting the education prior to the enrollment” has been achieved. After the admission of new students, “Boosting Project” will also have a series of new student-oriented activities. In addition, the college will set up a “Booting Project” for Sophomore students to imply their academic career planning and increase the value of life to facilitate their navigation.
