七夕背景（Background）

“天阶夜色凉如水，卧看牵牛织女星。”（The steps seem steeped in water when cold grows the night. She lies to watch two stars in love meet in the sky. 许渊冲、许明 译）这句脍炙人口的七绝诗（seven-character quatrain）用质朴流畅的语言生动地描写了中国古代七夕时节的情景，呈现出灵动之姿，颇为动人心魄。七夕节，又称七巧节、七姐节、女儿节、乞巧节等，是中国民间的传统节日，它的英文翻译也有多个版本，比如Qixi Festival，Double Seventh Festival，Chinese Valentine's Day等等。每年的七夕节日的时间根据农历而定，在阳历上略有不同 ，今年的七夕是在8月14日。

鹊桥仙

the Cowherd meets the Maid

When Autumn's Golden wind

embraces Dew of Jades,

All the love scenes on earth,

however many, fade

Their tender love flows

like a stream;

This happy date seems

but a dream.

Can they bear a separate

homeward way?

If love between both sides

can last for aye,

Why need they stay together

night and day?

Fairy Of The Magpie Bridge

Among the beautiful clouds,

Over the heavenly river,

Crosses the weaving maiden.

A night of rendezvous,

Across the autumn sky.

Surpasses joy on earth.

Moments of tender love and dream,

Shall withstand the time apart.

相传每年七月初七，牛郎织女会于天上的鹊桥相会（Meet each other across the Milky Way）。拜七姐（Worship seven sister），祈福许愿（Prayer wishing）、乞求巧艺（Beg opportunely art）、坐看星空（Watch the stars）、祈祷姻缘（Pray for marriage）、储七夕水（Qixi Festival water storage）等是七夕的传统习俗（Traditional custom）。经过历史的发展，七夕被赋予了“牛郎织女”（“a metaphor for a couple living separately in different places”）的美丽爱情传说，使其成为了象征爱情的节日，它也被认为是中国最具浪漫色彩的传统节日。在当代，七夕更是产生了“中国情人节”的文化含义。
